US Senior Open - Sunday

11:13 am - Live from the Final round of the US Senior Open at the Broadmoor. Eduardo Romero and Fred Funk will be the last group today and will tee-off just before noon.

One thing before we get going. The Bear is back. Last night the bear that has been terrorizing the US Senior Open this week, okay terrorizing is a stretch, got into the concession stand on the 7th hole last night, eating candy, hot dogs, bread and other goodies. The stand was not destroyed and will be operational today.

If you saw the movie “Open Season”, the cartoon about a bear and a deer, you can easily get the image of what happened. If not, rent it. It’s pretty good.

I will be spending a lot of time on the course today. It’s the last chance to see these guys and I dont want to miss out. However, it is warm out and I do love air conditioning so maybe I’ll be back soon. You just never know.

In case you were wondering, Greg Norman is tied for fifth at even par. There are only three guys that have a shot at winning this thing. Romero, Funk and John Cook. That is it. Romero is 9-under, Funk is 7-under and Cook is 6-under. Tom Kite is the only other player in red numbers at 1-under. No one is going to go so low today that he gets into that group. Conversely, all the guys at the top are not going to shoot an 82 and fall apart.

So its Romero, Funk and Cook. I’ll take Funk.

Romero’s fellow countryman Angel Caberra, the 2007 US Open Champion, told Romero to find an Argentinian restaurant in town and have a big steak. Can someone tell me where the Argentinian restaurant is in Colorado Springs? I really dont know and would like to try it if indeed Romero wins this thing.

1:31 pm - I’m back to the media center after spending about 90 minutes on the course. I was just getting into a groove watching the leaders when the airhorn blew suspending play for weather. Only the weather wasnt different today than the other two days, but I guess lightning was spotted somewhere and since these guys are carrying a bag of metal sticks, I guess it was appropriate.

Play has now resumed and our leaders are on the seventh hole. Romero is at 9-under, while Funk bogies the first hole and has pared the rest to stand at 6-under. Cook meanwhile has two bogies and has fallen to 4-under.

Look who is on the move, its Greg Norman. Birdies at the fifth and sixth holes has him at 2-under for the tournament. Okay, he’s still seven shots off the lead but you never know.

1:40 pm - Funk has birdied the seventh hole and is at 7-under, two shots back. Fans love Funk. Funk loves the fans. He’s getting really pumped up.

I guy I have totally ignored during this tournament is Mark McNulty. He started the day at 1-over par and is 4-under on his round today, six shots back of the leader. He fired a front nine 32 and is the hottest golfer on the course right now.

I just found out why we have media day at golf courses for tournaments that we will cover. To know the course! Greg Norman had a pitch shot on the par-five ninth hole. Ironically, I had the same pitch shot on that hole a year ago. As soon as it landed I knew it was gone down the ridge. Why? Because my shot went down the hill as well. Norman just gave up a great birdie opportunity there.

Norman has not been doing well on the par-fives this week. He should be overpowering them with his length. He ends up making bogey and he’s done with his comeback. His approach at ten goes into a bunker. So long Greg’s chances of a historic comeback.

2:18 pm - I’m going to stay in the media center for a while. There is free ice cream. No, there is another reason. Walking around a golf course during a tournament is very cool but it will not tell you the story. I want to see this story unfold. Romero is up by two and Funk has nine holes to catch him. Cook is trying to get back into this tournament. This place is packed with people so my chances of seeing how this plays out are pretty slim. TV is better. TV with free ice cream is the best.

Both Romero and Funk make pars on the ninth hole. That green is so tricky and both missed it on the right edge.

My man Jeff Klein has no magic today. He’s 3-over par for the day but who cares. The man from Nebraska shot a 64 yesterday at an Open. He should take that with him forever. Never again should he pay for a meal in Scottsbluff.

Man how Greg Norman has fallen. Once he was 2-under for the tournmant, now he is 1-over. I dont want to make excuses for the man but he is playing his final championship round. The last 12 competitive rounds he has played have been for major championships. Has to be exhausting on the mind.

2:32 pm - Romero has birdied the 10th hole to get to 10-under, three shots ahead of Funk. Then drives right into the rough on 11. Open door for Funk who drives it in the EXACT SAME PLACE! What a shame.

3:10 pm - Okay, things are getting interesting here. Romero has bogied three straight holes on the back nine after making birdie at 10. He falls to 7-under. Fred Funk made a TRIPLE BOGEY on 13. An awful hole and it may cost him the Open. Now Romero leads by four.

Hooray! Greg Norman chips in for a birdie at 16. My man. His putter has let him down all week long so he uses his wedge to make birdie. Too late but a great week nonetheless.

3:24 pm - The bogey train continues for Eduardo Romero but he is still going to win this thing. He and Funk bogey 14. Funk is 2-under while Romero falls to 6-under. The bogey by Funk sends him in a tie for second with John Cook. Mark McNulty will be the leader in the clubhouse at 1-under if he pars 18.

3:35 pm - Greg Norman is going to finish in the top-five for the US Senior Open. Three majors, three weeks and three top five finishes. That is amazing. Maybe I’m gushing a bit since I am such a Norman fan, but its downright incredible.

Funk finally gets one back at 17 with a birdie to go to 3-under. He’s three back with one to play. Unless Romero pulls a Van de Velde he’s not going to win the championship like I predicted earlier in the day.

Speaking of Romero. I think he should be nicknamed El Oso or “The Bear” in honor of the two memorable things about this championship, himself and our wildlife friend. It would be a great marketing tool.

4:06 pm - Just got done speaking with Greg Norman and he’s going to take a lot of time off. He says you wont see him until December for the Shark Shoot-out. Well, at least the last three weeks were fun.

I just found out that I can not call Romero “El Oso”. He already has a nickname, El Gato or the Cat. So much for my brilliant marketing idea.

Romero makes par on 18 and the crowd goes wild. A four-shot win over Fred Funk. Mark McNulty with a 68 finished third with Norman coming in fourth. John Cook shot a terrible 77 to finish fifth.

4:35 pm - Well the championship is now over and all that is left is for the Broadmoor to return to normal. No more ropes, outhouses or big hand operated scoreboards. I wish I could play the course tomorrow just to see what the conditions were like. All the pros hated the inconsistancy of the greens.

Othewise it was a great week. The Champions Tour was a brilliant idea. There is still room in fan’s hearts to see guys like Kite, Watson, Norman, Irwin, Cook, Funk, etc, still play golf. Fans crammed this place and the tournament ran smoothly.

Even the bear had some fun!
